Researchers at MIT discovered that the human brain can identify whole images that our eyes see for as little as 13 milliseconds. To put that in perspective, a blink of an eye takes about 300 to 400 milliseconds. So, we're talking about seeing and understanding an image in a tiny fraction of a blink. This is much faster than previously thought, as earlier studies suggested it took at least 100 milliseconds to identify an image.
This super-fast processing likely happens because the information flows in one direction, like a quick "feedforward" wave from your eyes through the visual centers in your brain. Even if the image is gone in 13 milliseconds, part of your brain keeps working on it for a bit longer, allowing you to understand what you saw. This rapid understanding is crucial for how we navigate the world, helping our brain decide where to look next as our eyes dart around about three times per second.

Several things can change how quickly we perceive something:
Our visual system has a sort of "refresh rate," known as the Flicker Fusion Frequency (FFF). If a light flashes on and off slowly, you see it flicker. But if it flashes fast enough (for cone vision, which we use in bright light, this is often around 60 times per second or 60 Hz), it looks like a steady, continuous light. This tells us about the temporal resolution of our vision – how quickly we can distinguish separate moments in time.
Our eyes are almost constantly moving in quick jumps called saccades, about 2-3 times every second. During these incredibly fast movements (which can last around 50 milliseconds), our vision is actually suppressed for a brief period (over 100 milliseconds) to prevent us from seeing a blurry smear. Our brain then cleverly stitches together the information from before and after the saccade to give us a stable, continuous view of the world. This involves a "soft handoff" of visual information and relies on our visual working memory.
Humans can perceive and identify images flashed for an incredibly short time – as little as 13 milliseconds. However, the whole process from light hitting your eye to you consciously recognizing what you saw involves several stages and takes a bit longer, typically a few hundred milliseconds.
